Powered Armor concept - 2007

Description

This one dates back to 2007 - at this point, I think my female art in general started to improve a lot and stylize more. I owe part of that to sitting next to ~maazka in class and looking at her awesome art as she drew it.

This was part of my attempt to unify formerly disparate concepts, while incorporating new ones, into my PTK storyline/mythos. The basic ideas took root here combined with new ones and are still plot elements.

See, the premise is that a now-defunct civilisation created sophisticated powered armor in a civil war between them and their genetically modified brethren (who would become known as elves). The armor in the middle of the pic was the baseline design - it was sophisticated armor composed of special modular nanobots - capable of responding to the user's commands. The armor was capable of matter conversion, and as such as long as in an atmosphere was self-regenerating. However, interfacing was not possible without a particular series of nanites in the bloodstream - when the ship carrying these crashed, and the survivors mingled into the other human population, all that remained of the knowledge of these weapons was lore and legend, their true nature lost. The few capable of entering the ship and commanding the armor had their nanites passed along the bloodline, in vitro, from mother to child.

Now, for Tyrannekarde, the original rediscoverer of the technology, she was a descendent of the original crew (though far removed), and as such had the nanites in her blood. She was able to enter the ruined, hidden ship as a result. Not exactly understanding what she saw, being unable to read the forgotten language, she ended up stumbling into the armory, where she bonded with one of the powered armor suits. It immediately took the form she wished of it, giving her her iconic armor look - however, due to her limited understanding of the tech's capabilities, to her it was only a powerful suit of armor, nothing more - and it thus behaved as such.

After the fall of Perrin to the Mageocracy, and its restoration to the original Prower dynasty, the survivors, led by Tash, found their way to the ruins as documented by Tyrannekarde so many years ago - a secluded valley, it would be a place for the refugees to survive and rebuild. Tash, being from a more technologically advanced environment, recognised the ship for what it was. Having received a vial of Tyrannekarde's blood (Tyrannekarde had at least surmised via legend that the ship responded to blood, and via superstition as a result had correctly assumed that a blood transfer would confer that upon her successor). Entering, Tash realised what it was, and found a central computer hookup, enabling her to reconfigure/translate the languages used intuitively (it used a direct mental interface). Taking a team of soldiers inside for a month, they studied every nook and cranny, and determined just what the armor Tyrannekarde had obtained was.

As a result, they became the second generation of Powered Armor warriors - with a better understanding of what their armor could do, they were able to customize the look, as well as "take it off" by having it reconfigure into regular items of clothing at will. To the right is shown Tash's personal armor configuration, with the helmet she dons to the left of it.

At the bottom of the picture, is the configuration taken on by the mole - the insane former wood elven "demigoddess" Shimira. Beaten and powerless after a defeat, she managed to infiltrate the ship and obtain a suit of her own. Using this, she was perhaps more powerful in some ways than before, as the suit responded to her mental commands and recreated, after a fashion, her druidic powers (which included the ability to grow vines, roots, and tendrils from her body instantaneously - like all Wood Elves, but never used offensively until her). The suit's synthesis abilities were thus used for her to sprout powerful tendrils from her back - at potentially infinite length, number, and directly under her control, she was a force to be reckoned with.

The only known weakness of the powered armor that is an inherant flaw is its vulnerability to electromagnetic pulses. As well, when removed from a suitable source of matter, it is unable to regenerate and thus becomes vulnerable (eg, if in space).

As far as power - the original used by Tyrannekarde was powered by a gemstone of power, which allowed the suit to directly draw power from the ever-encompassing field known as Magic. Tash's generation lacked said crystals as power sources - however, these were supplemented by human-developed Power Cells, which enabled them to function fairly normally unless said cells were disrupted (although they were definitively weaker than Tyrannekarde's armor). Shimira's benefitted by the Elven predisposition to channeling magic- as such Shimira was able to power her armor directly.
